Xiangshi means the elephant thinking game, it is the Chinese version of the game of chess.
Each emperor is confined to his own fortress and cannot see the other emperors. The kingdoms are separated by a "river" and the goal is to conquer the enemy empire.

Chinese chess was developed from a seventh-century Indian game called "Chaturanga", but it is a Chinese game, with Chinese characteristics, such as: emperor, mandarin, guards, castles, and so on.

The goal of the game, similar to chess, is to capture the opponent's main pawn (the emperor). The game is played on an 8x9-square board, at the intersections of the lines. A river runs through the center of the board, which not all pawns can cross.
