The game is thought to have originated in China, where the most expensive version of the game was made. The sticks were carved from ivory, and each stick had a head. The heads were sculpted in the shapes of various animals, and each stick was scored based on the complexity of the sculpture on its head.
The participant holds all the game sticks together and releases them at once, into a random pile of sticks. The goal is to remove sticks from the pile without moving the other sticks, with each starting stick receiving points, according to its color.
